When arriving into the old city of Split, it is possible to feel a trip through the history. Protected by the walls that surround an area of about 30.000 square km, the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, built between the 3rd and 4th century, covers one part of the old city, where most refugee families came to take shelter as they were chased from Salona at the beginning of the 7th century.
Although many parts of the palace were rebuilt and reconstructed, the major part of the Roman imperial palace still makes an imposing part of the city.

The ancient city of Salona was the capital of Dalmatia, during the period of the Roman Empire. Today you can see there its ancient ruins, together with the ruins from the early Christianity, theatre from the 2nd century, numerous sarcophagi, amphitheatre and the Episcopal church.
